Leading During Transitions

If there is anything we’ve learned during the past year it’s that times change. Sometimes they change for good. Other times the changes are more negative. In any case, learning how to lead during times of change is important to any business owner. Now we are looking at a national vaccine rollout and a push to return to something like the old normal we were comfortable with. But how do we go about leading during transitions? The truth is there’s no single answer, but here are some things to think about as business owners.

Believe it or Not, You’re Being Watched

One of the most valuable lessons for a leader is that someone is always looking at them as an example. We often forget this because we feel like we’re just going about our day. The truth is that you never really know who’s looking at you. A team member, a customer, or some random member of the community could be watching your actions and they will judge you based on them. Just remember to always set the example you want to be known for because you never know who’s watching.

Standards Must Be Consistent

The funny thing about standards is that they need to be standard. One of the biggest missteps for a leader is to have the “do as I say not as I do” attitude. It breeds discontent and makes you look dishonest. Sometimes this comes about because we think we want a standard, but we haven’t really thought it through. Take a moment and think about the standards you want. Are you willing to uphold them for yourself? If so then you can use them. If not, then you need to rethink them.

Think About The People You’re Responsible For

A lot of leaders make mistakes during transitions because they get caught up in their own thoughts and ideas. But leadership isn’t about our own egos, it’s about taking care of the people in our charge. Sometimes change is difficult, but that doesn’t mean you get to forget about your team. Consider taking some time each day to connect with them and think about what your decisions will do to them. In the end, great leaders take care of their people.
