This month we sat down for an interview with Ben-Jamin Toy, the founder and visionary behind this incredible business to learn more about his experience in North Charleston, his advice to new business owners, and the lessons learned along the way.
What makes North Charleston a great place to build a business?
It has a wide variety of different types of business. The types of people and businesses are so diverse it makes working with different clients fun. Since I don’t have one niche, it makes it really cool just to operate and see different clients.
Do you have any advice for new business owners in the area?
Get out and meet people. Southern hospitality is alive and well. Most folks won’t let you feel alone and you’re welcomed into any type of networking event, or even just going out to dinner or whatnot. People will open their arms and welcome you.
Also, get out there and do. Make a mess and figure out your core later. But for any new business, get out there and take action. Don’t let fear cripple you.
How has the North Charleston Chamber helped your business grow and succeed?
First, it’s helped just getting to know some folks and learn about other businesses. Also, it’s been a big help with referrals. We are a referral-only business at this point and several members, including Alan Thompson and others, have really opened some doors for my business. That’s been very helpful.
What are some challenges you have had to overcome after starting your business?
I didn’t have any seed money, or budget, or actual plan and just started by just sort of throwing mud on the wall. Obstacles were pretty much everything. No money, no plan, no idea of really what I wanted to do, I just wanted to work for myself and be paid to play outside. It’s taken me a number of years to really hone in on where the most profitable repeat, and enjoyable business all come together.
Now we’ve got that sweet spot. I’m very excited about where we’re at, how we get to benefit chambers and other businesses, and really be seen as an ally in making the Charleston area a great place to work. With our services, we help companies make things fun. This helps their people enjoy what they do, they stay around, and everyone makes money.
